FAQ
What is a job description?
The Society for Human Resource Management defines a job description as, “a useful, plain-language tool that explains the tasks, duties, function and responsibilities of a position. It details who performs a specific type of work, how that work is to be completed, and the frequency and the purpose of the work as it relates to the organization’s mission and goals.”
It is usually drawn up by the hiring manager, the individual in the organization responsible for overseeing the selection process for the role, often with the help of the company’s HR department and/or an external recruiter.
Why is the job description analysis process so important?
For those who are concerned about finding a perfect job fit, a job description is a window into the mind of the target employer. Through this window, you can learn the following:
- Underlying reasons why the employer is hiring for this position,
- Employer expectations on prospective candidates
- Technical qualifications for filling this role
- Whether or not the leadership is genuinely interested in the organization’s long-term success
- Most importantly, how to gain the upper-hand from target employers in a job search
By analyzing the job description, you can position your resume and cover letter to WOW your target employer, find your perfect fit and land your dream job.
