Despite the prevalence of age-related stereotypes in our society, we are lucky that there are currently four generations of women – Baby boomers, Generation X, Millennials, and Generation Z – all working side by side. It’s important to remember that the workplace has changed immensely over the past few decades. When it comes to colleagues who are Baby Boomers and Gen Xers, we must keep in mind that the more experienced they are, the more we can learn from them. More seasoned women have watched how various leaders launched and built careers in the office. Even a secretary who has been working in the organization for twenty to thirty years has probably witnessed colleagues advance in their careers and will know how to handle various stakeholders. These women can also teach you how to turn acquaintances into mentors.
Younger Women and Mentors
For younger women – Millennials and Gen Z’ers – you have the ability to empower yourselves and become mentors too. Growing up with social media, you understand the power behind the technology and how you can leverage it to strengthen a company’s brand presence. You might be able to create and analyze excel spreadsheets quicker. You also bring a fresh perspective to solving pressing challenges that impact an organization’s bottom line. Notice how I said that women make the best mentors. I did not say ‘sponsor.’ A mentor can guide you and become a model for advancing your career. However, a mentor will not give you that desired promotion with higher pay and more responsibility. Only a ‘sponsor’ can do that.
Mentor-Sponsor Combinations
Having both a mentor and a sponsor is ideal. And often, a mentor can help you find a sponsor. A mentor might meet with you once a week, once a month, or even every few weeks or few months. Every situation is different. Ultimately, a mentor is someone who will help guide you in your career, and often in your life.
